Moving to a new home can be a very stressful event to a child. While exciting, moving to a new place means a world of change, ranging from getting to know a new dwelling to having to attend a brand-new school and make new friends. However, there are ways to mitigate to the stress that it may cause and better help your child to adjust to your new home.
First, help them get settled in their new living space. Make sure that your child feels comfortable and at ease in their new room. Having them feel like their new room is just that, theirs, they will better adjust to the idea of a new home, new community, and new life.
Next, make the most out of technology. Understandably, a child will miss of their old friends. Thanks to the internet, moving to a new town does not mean that a child has to lose touch with all of their old friends. Those friendships are all just a email, instant message, or text away.
Finally, encourage your child to make new friends in your new town. This can be done is wide manner of ways. Perhaps there are other children in the neighborhood that you have moved to. Help your child establish relationships with them. Another way is to get your child involved with activities in your new town. Perhaps they can join a sports team or get involved with a local youth group.
